One of Alentejo’s most iconic and awarded wines, inspired by Vega Sicilia Único and first produced in 1996, is now arriving on the market. The 2018 vintage of Tapada de Coelheiros Garrafeira clearly expresses the estate’s identity: freshness, elegance, depth, and remarkable aging potential that set this wine apart in the national scene. It is a wine that reflects the importance of time for the Alentejo brand—it waited seven years for the perfect moment to be shared.
Tapada de Coelheiros Garrafeira Red 2018, crafted from Aragonês and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, displays a deep, brilliant ruby color. On the nose, it reveals complexity and precision, with notes of red and black fruits, black pepper, cedar, and subtle hints of oak. On the palate, it shows an elegant structure, firm yet polished tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, persistent finish. Its quality has been recognized with 95 points by the international publication Robert Parker.
This wine is produced exclusively from the historic Vinha Leonilde, planted in 1981, which has always been at the heart of this Garrafeira. Situated on sandy-clay soils with a southwest exposure, the vineyard benefits from natural water stress that favors phenolic concentration and varietal expression. Between 2016 and 2017, missing vines were replanted with the original genetic material, and regenerative agricultural practices were implemented, including cover crop sowing and controlled grazing, strengthening soil vitality and vineyard resilience.
The 2018 harvest was marked by irregular weather, with a dry winter followed by a cool, wet spring. However, the harvest itself took place under mild and stable conditions, ensuring grapes of excellent quality and balanced ripeness. The wine was aged eighteen months in barrels and foudres, followed by five years in bottle.
According to Luís Patrão, winemaker at Tapada de Coelheiros:
“This wine is a reflection not only of our philosophy but also of time, and the uniqueness and richness of our terroir. Today, the entire estate that produces this historic label is managed using sustainable and regenerative practices, with organic and regenerative agriculture as a vital pillar of everything produced and offered at Tapada de Coelheiros. Garrafeira is intended for those who value aging and time, allowing depth and complexity to develop in the wine, and for those who enjoy pairing wine with fine cuisine. It is, of course, a wine made for special occasions.”
Tapada de Coelheiros Garrafeira Red 2018 is now available for purchase on the brand’s website and at selected retailers.
